Hessle History Society

The Society was formed in 1992 by a group of enthusiasts led by Christopher Harvy. Since then it has met regularly on the third Thursday of the month (7.15pm, March to November). For several years the meetings were held in Hessle Library but now we meet in the Town Hall. The meetings provide a platform to hear about the history of Hessle, though sometimes we have speakers who talk about wider aspects of the East Riding.

HLHS aim to promote and encourage the history and traditions of the town of Hessle and the study of its history. As well as meetings we have also held several exhibitions on Hessle’s history and we currently provide a photographic display in the Co-opertative store in Hessle Square. We also have a web site which can be accessed by Googling: Hessle Local History.

We have an archive of over a thousand photogrpahs of Hessle covering all aspects of Hessle’s history and we aew currently developing a general archive which we hope to make available to the general public. This will contain books, documents abd maps as well as general ephema connected to the town’s history. We are also hoping to produce a written history of Hessle in the near future.

If you are interested in the history of Hessle please come along to one of our meetings, you will be made most welcome. Membership costs £8 per year( plus£1 per meeting). Visitors pay £2 to attend meetings.
