HESSLE TOWN COUNCIL COMMUNITY AWARDS SCHEME DETAILS

1. AIM OF THE COMMUNITY AWARDS SCHEME

Hessle Town Council is proud of the many community organisations, individuals and activities in the parish and the community spirit of residents.  The Town Council is keen to recognise the achievements of those people who voluntarily and selflessly work to improve and enhance the lives of local people.  In recognising the huge benefit of this kind of work it is hoped that others will be inspired to contribute to make the parish of Hessle an even better place to live and work.

The aim of presenting awards is to promote pride in the community and to promote the idea of the community as something to be valued.  The presentation of the awards will provide an opportunity to increase awareness of the good works in the parish and to allow that work to be celebrated.

2. COMMUNITY AWARDS

Hessle Town Council invites you to nominate anyone who you feel deserves to be recognised for their contributions.  They can be an adult (over 18), a young person (under 18) or a community group.  The awards will be presented in a ceremony at the Annual Town Meeting to which everyone is invited to thank these unsung heroes who make a real difference.

3. HONORARY FREEMAN AND FREEWOMAN AWARD

From time to time, members of the community demonstrate outstanding commitment and contribution to the wellbeing of Hessle and it is recognised that their efforts should be acknowledged.  The Town Council will do this, in special circumstances that meet the criteria, by awarding to an individual the title of ‘Honorary Freeman’ or ‘Honorary Freewoman’ of Hessle.  This honour will be awarded only on rare and exceptional occasions.

The nominee may have given extensive and eminent service to the area of Hessle and its local community (e.g. service to the Town Council in respect of Councillors or Employees and service to the other organisations and voluntary and community groups) in a largely voluntary capacity.  The nominee must have made an outstanding contribution to the Parish such that the nominee’s contribution can be seen to stand above the contributions made by most other people.  The Local Government Act 1972 – 2009 Amendment Section 249 (5) and (6) allows all Local Councils to exercise powers to confer the title of “honorary freeman” or “honorary freewoman” to persons of distinction and those who, in the Council’s opinion, have rendered eminent services to the Council’s area.

Nominations for this special award must be made in the strictest confidence without the nominee’s knowledge.  Any resident or elector of Hessle may make a nomination but it must be sponsored by a Town Councillor.

4. NOMINATIONS

The Town Council will aim to make residents aware of the awards by including details in the Hessle Town Council Newsletter sent to all households and on the website.  It will be further promoted on the Town Council notice boards.

Members of the public can nominate someone for a community award by email, attaching a completed nomination form or in writing to the council (with the nomination form) stating why they think they should receive an award.
