Hessle Town Council Mayor’s Civic Service – A Day of Community and Celebration

On Sunday, 23rd February 2025, the town of Hessle came together to celebrate the annual Mayor’s Civic Service, a tradition that highlights the spirit of unity and civic pride. The event commenced with a drinks reception at Hessle Town Hall on South Lane, hosted by the Mayor and Mayoress of Hessle. Guests, including local dignitaries, Councillors, and members of the community, gathered to share conversations and a refreshment before the formal proceedings began.

Following the reception, the civic procession led by toastmaster Peter Nendick and piper Aiden Standley made its way through the town to All Saints Church in Hessle Square. Upon arrival, the procession was warmly welcomed by Reverend Gemma Turner, Vicar of Hessle, who officiated the service. The congregation enjoyed a selection of hymns and readings delivered by members of the community and councillors from Hessle Town Council.

After the service, the Mayor, official party, and attendees returned to Hessle Town Hall, where a mouth watering afternoon tea was served. The delightful spread, provided by local delicatessen The Pickled Fig, featured an array of savoury treats, cakes and refreshments that were thoroughly enjoyed by all. As guests indulged in their treats, they were entertained by the impressive vocal talents of Opera17, Hessle’s own operatic society. Their captivating performance included show-stopping renditions of classics such as Bohemian Rhapsody and hits from beloved musicals like Les Misérables.

Adding to the excitement of the day, a raffle and auction were held, raising nearly £600 for the Mayor’s chosen charity this year—Humber Rescue. The generous contributions from attendees will go a long way in supporting this vital local charity, which provides essential search and rescue services along the Humber Estuary.

The Mayor’s Civic Service was a resounding success, bringing together residents and community leaders in a celebration of Hessle’s strong civic spirit. The event not only honored local traditions but also reinforced the town’s commitment to charity, culture, and togetherness. The Mayor and Mayoress expressed their gratitude to all who attended and contributed, ensuring that this cherished annual event continues to thrive for years to come.
